Yeah, it was a pretty successful season.

Blown Away!

New England was hit pretty hard with a storm this past week. Relentless winds raging at 70+ mph hit the area for several hours causing widespread damage with big old trees toppling over and power outages. We were left with no power or hot water for five days. Luckily, we were spared any major damage, and a stroll through town the following days showed us how incredibly lucky we were:

It's never too late!

Here is a catch up on the McMullin happenings the past few months since I last posted.

Thanksgiving Eve found us in the city in the middle of Central Park enjoying a night of ice skating. Stockton's cute girlfriend, Meagan joined us and it was so fun. The weather was mild and Sam and Isaac skated their hearts out. We started the evening at Patsy's Pizzeria and ended at Starbucks. Doesn't get much better than that, folks.

You can't live in Connecticut and not cut down your own Christmas tree.

Wagon ride, saws, wood burning fires. . . . this tree farm provides it all.

Isaac beamed in his little school Christmas presentation.

The cute little blonde girl all the way to the right is his current true love.

He achingly told me recently that she is "soo, soo pretty" and that he wants to "marry her badly".

Our annual visit to Santa in Pound Ridge, New York.

Isaac asked for a dog. That darn Santa didn't deliver!

Our Christmas Eve tradition includes gathering with friends for dinner and then going to "God's Acre" in New Canaan to carol with the rest of the townsfolk. This was our 9th year singing by candlelight. You'd think it was death for Spencer, but he soon discovered the fun of setting his carol sheets on fire with the candle and then it became a splendid activity.

Oh to be five again on Christmas morning!

It was a big weekend for Stockton.

He finally got his drivers license after a year of permits, courses, and tests.

The night before his birthday, he went on his first date - a double date with his best friend - the four of them catching a train to Grand Central, then a subway to Greenwich Village, going to a performance of the Blue Man Group, hot chocolate at Starbucks across the street afterwards, back on the subway to Grand Central, and then a train home.

Lucky kids!

His birthday fell on Homecoming and as a member of student council, he marched in the homecoming parade and escorted a homecoming queen at half time during the football game. Oh to be 17 again.

Isaac asked for either a dog or a football field for his 5th birthday. He got a football field. Best birthday present we've ever given. A football field. And a new football. And a new football shirt. We ate football cupcakes. Hit a football pinata. And played some serious football at the party. And every day ever since. Thank you industrial outdoor spray paint and pvc piping.

Bad Timing

Spencer made the JV soccer team, one of only two freshmen to do so. Shortly after try outs, he broke his arm, at a soccer practice. The day before the first game, he got a cast. Couldn't have been worse timing. He's waited a long time to play high school soccer. But, it didn't prove to stop him. The next day, he scored the first goal of the season for the team and has managed to score half a dozen more since. Go Spencer!

National Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

This has been years in the making and Stockton and Barry were not about to miss it. John Stockton's induction into the National Basketball Hall of Fame. And wouldn't you know it: Michael Jordan was inducted on the same night. The event held in Springfield, Massachussetts was a star studded night where tickets were hard to come by. Thankfully, Barry's years with the NBA and his relationship with David Stern scored him two tickets. Stockton's name didn't hurt either. What a night!

Kayacking on the Sound

Some friends invited us to kayack on the sound on a gorgeous day recently. Sam and his best friend, Brett spent most of the time on the water, but I got a little time, too, and loved it. I see the appeal and can't wait to get back in a kayack again soon.

My brother Joe, his girlfriend Chelsea, and her parents came to visit from Salt Lake.

We had so much fun. Chelsea is a blast. She is a local celebrity at a radio station

and knows how to have a good time as well as be a good friend.

We went to the beach where Isaac and Joe had

lots of fun and bonding time together . . .

Chelsea's parents, Mike and Michelle are so young at heart

and very fun to have around.

Days like this don't get any better.

We seriously could barely pull ourselves from the beach.

The company spent a few days in the city and I joined them for a day.

I like the way I crouch down when Chelsea does. Except she's 5'9" and I'm 5'1".

It's the law that all visitors must go to Serendipity when in the city.

And must dress like tourists, too.

Chelsea and I are part goofy; part vain. Couldn't resist posing for a mirror

on the street on the West side.

We spent the better part of an hour stalking Gavin Rossdale

who was just a few feet away with his kids and nannies. This bench

gave us the perfect view and I'm sure we didn't look the least

bit suspicious sitting here giggling for an hour with our cameras

pointed at them.

Back to School

Isaac is so excited to be attending the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford.

A big step after doing two years of joy school.

Many of the neighbor kids posed before the bus arrived on the first day.

Sam's the oldest on the bus - a big 5th grader now.

Teenagers don't tend to pose for the first day of school picture. But that doesn't stop mom from taking their first day of walking to school picture. Stockton is an 11th grader and Spencer is a 9th grader. Am I really old enough to have two high schoolers?

Isaac in the City

Isaac invited Sam to join us on his special day in the city. We had so much fun together. Our destination for the day was Central Park where we love to play at two separate parks. The first is a water park, with lots of water fountains spraying water; perfect for a hot August day. The second has our favorite slide that has found us returning to many times over the years. We made stops at the NBA store, Patsy's Pizzeria, and Dylan's candy store as well. Dinner was from a street vendor and we snacked on a New York pretzel in between.

Teenagers in the City

Time ran out for us this summer and we had to do a two for one day in the city with Stockton and Spencer. They didn't mind spending the day together. In fact, they preferred it. Stockton has decided he doesn't 'date his mom'. Also, being together enabled them a little freedom, as in safely being able to separate from mom for a time and do their own thing. They had fun walking Canal Street and a bit of Broadway. It wasn't long before I got a call on my cell phone and they wanted to meet back up with me. They were game for anything after that so we kept walking, seeing all the cool buildings, parks, stores, and sites the city has to offer. We ended the day in Times Square just as the sun went down and the bright lights came on.

Little Daredevil

After a couple of jumps, he decided to try his hand at a front flip.

Following tradition, Sam and I enjoyed a full day in New York City. The day's events were of his choosing and so we went to the Top of the Rock, the NBA store, Patsy's Pizzeria, and Serendipity. Sam is one of my favorite people to spend time with and to take a bite out of the big apple together was really great.

Utah!

Our annual summer trip to Utah has come and gone.

As always we did some really fun things . . .

We did lots of swimming at pools all over the valley.

We went to Energy Solutions Arena and bought plenty of Jazz memorabilia - tattoos included.

Sam, Isaac, and I hiked Timpanogos and enjoyed the cave at the top.

We spent lots of time with Joe and Chelsea at their pool.

We did our traditional night in the mountains, building a campfire,

getting as dirty as possible, making smores, and sitting around the fire until it dies.

We made our annual pilgrimage to Lagoon - Chelsea, Mike, Jared, and Dan joined us this year. We get there as it is opening and stay until it closes. Ice cream at pioneer village is a must!

We went to the new Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House. It was beautiful with an unprecedented view of the Salt lake Valley and mountain range. The boys commented on how it dwarfs the Manhattan Temple in size.

We hiked Ensign Peak with Bob and had target practice with rocks on the way back down.

Barry and the boys spent a long weekend in St. George where they hiked,

played on the lake, and attended a family reunion.

We spent a Sunday afternoon enjoying Temple Square

We spent a day with friends at Cherry Hill Water Park

We went to the MLS All Star game in the beautiful new Rio Tinto stadium.

and least of all, I got my fill of Bajio!!!

Cousins

BYU Sports Camps

Spencer spent a week at BYU participating in the soccer camp.

He had a great time, his game improved,

and he got to play with his good friend, Jack Varvel, who is living in London.

Stockton spent at week at BYU honing his jumping skills at the track and field camp.

He set personal records in the long jump and triple jump and

learned some new tricks to help him be a better jumper.

He made a decision that day that he was going to do it

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Today was a picture perfect day to be in the city. Isaac and I joined Sam and his class on a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We had so much fun, it was hard to get back in the car and return home.

The roof garden had an amazing view of the city and Central Park. A great place to enjoy lunch in the warm sun.

The boys were troopers and actually enjoyed browsing the museum, despite all the nudity they got an eyeful of.

State Track Meet

What a great day for a High School State Track Meet. The weather was perfect and Stockton tied his personal record, placing 4th in the long jump overall. His two good friends and teammates placed 6th and 7th making it an exciting event and a great way to end the season.

This happy group of teenagers has paid their dues this school year and are glad it's over. Today was the last day of early morning seminary and they couldn't be happier. It wasn't too bad for Stockton since seminary was held at our house. Can't beat that commute. He woke up just before 6 a.m., got ready, and made his way to the family room. Once seminary ended at 7:00, the kids found their way to the kitchen for breakfast and then walked to school together. I don't think they'll miss the early start to their day, but I do think they'll miss starting it out together like that.

It's over! I'm officially retired from joy school. After four boys, eight years, approximately 30 kids, many wonderful moms, and songs-crafts-lessons-activities-snacks galore, I taught my last joy school lesson yesterday. It's a little bittersweet to close this chapter of my life, but all good things must come to an end. On to other things and new adventures for both Isaac and myself.

No more pity parties here wondering how I got passed up in the talent department. The other day, I overheard Isaac tell a friend, "my mom is the best mom!" I almost ran to him to plant a kiss right on his cheek. I restrained because he had a friend over, but then his next remark helped me stay planted, "...because she's the BEST sweeper!" he continued.

Huh.

Never really thought the sixteen times a day I sweep my kitchen floor went noticed. Not only does it get noticed, but I am the BEST at it!!

Wow.

Can even do it in my high heels. Yeah. I'm pretty much a big deal around here.

Our Mom is the kind of mom boys long to have; loving, caring, stern when needed, thoughtful, quick to compliment, sticks up for what is right and very hip. Over the years we have found ourselves laughing about the church song and story "I'll Build You a Rainbow" and that our mom beats that mom (without the dying part).

Thanks mom for "all the things you do" and even though we eventually will all be taller than you ... we will always look up to you.

Down Memory Lane

We spent one day showing the boys my childhood digs. Always a good thing to see just exactly where your mom came from - and this day gave them a whole new appreciation for me. At least that's what they said.

My grandma's house in Oldham, Lancashire. This is where I came home from the hospital and lived the first year of my life. When I was a little girl, I would spend weekends here having one-on-one sleepovers with my grandma. It was one of the highlights of my growing up.

122 Belgrave Road. This is where I lived from about ages 4-7.

My sister Carilee was born here. With just two bedrooms and four little girls, my ingenious parents transformed one walk in closet into a bedroom barely big enough to hold a crib.

My school in Warrington until age 10. My sister and I and two other boys who were brothers were the only mormons at this school and each day at lunchtime, I had to turn to my coffee cup upside down so that I wasn't served coffee with my lunch which was the ritual.

50 Poulton Crescent. Living in the lap of luxury. My last house before leaving England. My brother joined our family here and I have happy memories of these years.

Wales

One of my favorite spots on earth is North Wales. With it's rolling hills, castles, little quaint villages and scenic drives along the sea, it is beautiful and most of it seems still untouched. There is a tiny spot at the most Western tip that has captured me and draws me in: Aberdaron. I don't know how my dad discovered it, but he did and I am so grateful. Aberdaron has breathtaking views of cliffs and sea. A church with graveyard hugs the coastline. A hike along a green rolling cliff beckons towards the Irish sea. A bed and breakfast sits atop a hill overlooking the tiny village and it's beautiful coastal surroundings. If ever there was a place to stop and reflect and be still, this is it.

Family

We are blessed to have countless family and friends living in the British Isles. It was so great to be with them again. I am the oldest of 24 cousins and all my younger and hipper cousins are living there (with the exception of one in Chicago and one in Australia). Some are closer in age to my own children and it was fun to have them all meet.

Castles and motes and towers and roman walls and rolling hills all make for the perfect setting in a Narnia movie. One of our favorite family movies is Prince Caspian which Isaac watches regularly these days. He was in heaven as we explored castles and was always on the lookout for the characters that he suspected were right through the wall.

We started and ended our trip in London - spending about five days there. We stayed in the home of our friends, the Varvels. They live in the best and wealthiest part of London - right in Chester Square - next door to Margaret Thatcher. To say the place was amazing is an understatement. The posh seven-floor-with-elevator-home was a dream. The location was perfect. Suffice it to say, this was the highlight of the boys trip: London! We were lucky enough to have our friends from Connecticut, the Murphy's, join us the last weekend.

An Early Easter

We'll be spending Easter Sunday flying home from England this year, so we've enjoyed a few Easter traditions a little early. Isaac and I made edible nests and enjoyed an easter egg hunt with the joy school boys. As a family we decorated eggs with the Murphy family who will be joining us for a couple of days in London. I love this holiday!

London England Temple

In anticipation of my upcoming trip to England, I have done a bit of research on places of interest I'd love to share with my family. This beautiful picture of the London England Temple by Kelly Josephson crept up in my search and captured me. This is the Temple I was sealed in to my parents on a cold April day in 1971 with my sister Andree.

My dad had the privilege of attending the dedication of this Temple as an eleven year old boy with his widowed mum. He recalls sitting in the same room as President David O. McKay in prime seats on the third row. What an experience that must have been.

~The London Temple is located about 25 miles south of London.

~ The nearest neighbor to the London Temple was a farm for the horses of Sir Winston Churchill.

~ The London Temple was the first temple built in the British Isles and the second temple erected in Europe, following the Bern Switzerland Temple (1955).

~ The Magna Carta was signed in 1215 in the same county of Surrey where the London Temple is located.

~ The site where the London Temple stands, known as Newchapel Farm, was listed in the Domesday Book of William the Conquerer.

~ On Monday, December 15, 2008, an 8-foot statue of the angel Moroni was added by helicopter to the 160 foot high spire of the London Temple for the first time.

Really, I would have been happy to have only packed one small bag full of swimsuits in preparation for a hot week on the beach. It didn't take us too long to realize that Isaac didn't know a single Disney character. Not one. Never heard of Aladdin, Peter Pan, or Pinocchio. Didn't know the story of the Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella. Hadn't seen a single Toy Story movie. So, he was a bit clueless walking around the Magic Kingdom. We have started the Disney movie-a-day club since we returned home and are making up for lost time. This boy won't leave his childhood without knowing who his Disney characters are!

For his age (only a sophomore) and size (5' 7"), Stockton shouldn't be jumping what he is jumping. At his first indoor track meet, he took first place in the long jump and qualified for state. At FCAIC's, he took second place and set a personal record. At State this past week, he took 5th place overall and blew his personal record out the door - jumping over 20 feet. Stockton also competed in the sprints and his first place finish in the 4 x 300 relay helped his team win 1st place overall at FCAIC's. Yep, we're proud. His coach calls him a freak of nature. We call him awesome!

Once a week I pick Spencer up from school and we drive to fishbowl pets where he purchases 10 live crickets for $1 to feed to his two pet toads in the coming week. I like to think I deserve the mom of the year award for allowing live crickets in the house, but I know that award goes to the moms who actually let their kids have snakes and dogs like my boys really want. For now it's a firm "no!" on the snake and a lukewarm "someday" on the dogs. I'm happy to forego that award for now.

Snow Day

Poor little old Connecticut doesn't know what to do when it snows. If we wake up to any form of white flakes falling, you can bet school is cancelled. Sometimes it doesn't even have to snow - it just has to be in the forecast. School has been called off and we've sat at home with gray skies overhead and dry roads underfoot waiting for those flurries to fall. It's almost comical. Well, yesterday was a true snow day. As in 2-4 inches on the ground when we woke up with snow still falling. Nothing that Utah would cry over. But, our town did. And the kids were happy. And I'm sure every mother in town was, too.

Snow day rules:

Pry the children away from the tv and x-box

spend no less than 30 minutes finding winter wear and bundling up

drive to a favorite sledding hill

snow skate, sled, frolic and play in the snow

make lots of hot chocolate to warm up the children with an invitation to come help shovel the driveway when they are warmed up

shovel the driveway - solo - with no sight of helpful children

take the children to a matinee

to quote Sam: "hope for another snow day tomorrow!"

My date for the inauguration this year was Isaac. He watched the events unfold alongside me as I ran on the treadmill and then as we sat in front of the big screen for the actual oath of office.

When all was said and done, Isaac sighed and said, "So . . . Thomas S. Monson isn't our President anymore?!"

40 Never Looked So Good!

Barry here; I have commandeered the family blog for a day ... a red-letter day in our home. Little "Tammy the Pink" turns 40 years old today which we all know is the new 30 yet in Tammy's case it is the new 20! I have been with the birthday girl for over half her life and can attest that she truly is getting better with age. Born in Lancashire, England, Tammy has led an epic life with twists and turns accompanied by bursts of joy and excitment. So here's to you girlfriend - Happy 40th ... with many happy returns.

The following are a few of Tam's favorite things in no particular order, uh - except for the first one: English chocolate, sunsets, a good book, a hot sandy beach, being with her boys, her sisters, sleeping in, Starbucks hot chocolate, a good run, swingsets and playgrounds, snow at Christmas, a scenic drive, a good movie, root beer, geese flying overhead, being in NYC with yours truly and others, a song with meaning, a warm fire on a cold day, a hot candlelit bath, ending the day in family prayer and knowing all her boys are in bed safe and sound, being pals with Isaac, leading the music in Primary and seeing her boys do their duty on Sundays, a genuine smile, dinnertime as a family, hiking in the mountains and sitting by a lake, a good Broadway show, spring and fall days in Connecticut, summer nights in Utah and winters in Georgia, the English countryside, the moon coming over the Wasatch mountains, taking pictures, Indian food, reading obituaries, a good magazine, friends from all over the world, an ice cold glass of water, her mom, ... and being part of random acts of kindness. Oh, and comments on our blog page. Cheers to Tammy who has now set the bar as to how beautiful 40 can be.

Winter

Winter can be beautiful, especially with the brightness of the clean snow set against a backdrop of blue sky. Our family missed the snow while we were living in Georgia - we didn't see any during our four year stay there. I have to say it has been great to be back where we can enjoy a winter wonderland. We've made up for it this winter and have dusted off the coats, hats, and boots that have been packed away in the attic. We've enjoyed sledding, tubing, skiing, ice skating, snow skating, snowman making, fort building, shoveling, and more. We've ended the day by a roaring fire and stood at the window watching the snow fall. Winter certainly has its charm. But does it really have to last so long? By about February 1st, I'm really ready for summer!

Recently, Sam was the pillow manager at school (in charge of putting the pillows away nicely after reading workshop - remember this is 4th grade we're talking about).

His teacher joked with him and said "you did a better job on Wednesday, what's going on here...?"

Today in church we sang With Wondering Awe which ends with the chorus "Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna to his name!". Isaac, however, seemed to think the "hosanna" was really "O Santa" . . . and sang his little heart out. Eventually he had the presence of mind to turn to Barry and ask why we were singing about Santa in church?!

Today would be my mom's 61st birthday. Not a day goes by that I don't think about her and long to talk to her. My mom was great! I don't ever remember an unkind word coming out of her mouth, or any contention between the two of us. She was beautifully happy and full of charity. I'm grateful that I see her eyes in Isaac, see her patience in Sam, and see bits and pieces of her character in my sisters and brother. Nothing makes me happier than being told how alike we are. If I can be half the person she was, I will be immensely grateful.

Christmas at Temple Square

A great place to visit this time of year is Temple Square in Salt Lake. My mind reflects on this beautiful place frequently during the holiday season and I often long to walk around it, taking in the lights, the life size nativity, and the magical spirit of Christmas that can be found there. For those of you fortunate enough to live in the valley, bundle up your family or loved one and spend an evening strolling the grounds sometime this season.

It didn't take him too long to realize that snow is COLD and that after a couple of spills in it, this much anticipated venture is no longer fun.

Sure, we could have gone down the street to the local tree lot to pick out our Christmas tree, but that would have eliminated all the joy that came with taking two teenagers to a tree farm. Actually, there weren't too many complaints from the older boys. But what's so bad about taking a wagon ride with your family to a forest full of tree options? And what boy wouldn't love to tote a saw around the maze of trees ready to hack down the perfect tree and then drag it to the wrapping machine and watch it magically get wrapped up - all the while tripping over leftover tree stumps and enduring all the pictures your mother wants to take of the occasion? What could be funner than THAT? Apparently, a lot.

My favorite holiday movie picks

Who doesn't love Jimmy Stewart? I do and I love this movie. I have watched It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas for about the past twenty five years and it's my all time favorite. The story line, the characters, the love Mary has for George - it all grabs me. Over the years my dad has affectionately called me Donna Reed/Mary since he says I remind him of her. Considering the way I love this movie, that is the highest compliment.

The Polar Express. Something about this family movie keeps us watching it every year. The story is sweet and stays true to the book. We love the soundtrack and listen to it in the car. My boys insist on watching it with a mug of hot chocolate - thanks to a fun song early in the movie titled "Hot Chocolate". It doesn't hurt that Tom Hanks is all over this production, too.

Mr. Krueger's Christmas. Another Jimmy Stewart classic. I'll admit this movie lags at times, but it goes back to my childhood and I've loved it ever since. I always wanted a daughter like Clarissa (THAT didn't happen - maybe a granddaughter?) and I always loved the tender way Mr. Krueger missed his deceased wife, yet remained strong. Most importantly, the stable scene is in my opinion the most touching Christmas moment in film. Speaks to me every time.

Thanksgiving Day

Another train ride into the city + The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade + Losing Spencer in the crowd + a New York pretzel + walking into the house to the smell of the Turkey cooking + preparing a feast with those you love, for those you love + Josh Groban's Christmas CD playing in the background + football on the tv + realizing we hadn't made the gravy until we sat down to eat + expressing our gratitude around the table + leaving the dishes on the table to take a family post dinner walk + walking longer and farther than planned and throwing in an impromptu football game while we were at it + beating everyone home and doing the dishes with a willing and cheerful 16 year old + pies and egg nog ice cream + a late movie for all the adults + lots of pictures + missing those we love who weren't with us = SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR.

Ice Skating in Central Park

The entire family with company in tow headed into the city to watch the balloons being blown up for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade the night before. We experienced an unexpected diversion along the way that turned out to be funner than any balloon blowing up. As we strolled through Central Park, the ice skating rink captivated us and we were drawn in. There were no crowds. There was no cold bite in the air. There was just the magical city all lit up and the beautiful park in all its tranquility and US. We loved it!

Thanksgiving week was so enjoyable because of the family who came to visit: my sister Lindsey, her boyfriend Jared, and my step dad Bob. This threesome is as fun as they get and the type of company you don't mind staying longer than three days. In Connecticut we went on long drives, walked around a perfect New England town, played guitar hero, pool, and cards, and more. One of the week's highlights was all the time we spent in the city. We took the train in three days in a row - and walked our legs off each time. We reckon we walked a couple hundred miles, give or take a few. We practically covered all of Manhattan. On. Foot. We also caught a glimpse of Faith Hill performing outside at Rockefeller Plaza and the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.

TEN

Ten years ago today after a morning of excrutiating labor (just had to throw that in), number three boy was born to our family in Sandy, Utah. He was the talk of the hospital nursery due to his mass of blonde wavy hair. He had the tiniest features and was so incredibly cute. I fell in love with him the minute the epidural took effect and couldn't keep my eyes off him once he was here.

There is something about the third child. Sam is good as gold. His disposition is one of calmness and peace. He is quick to offer an apology at the slightest offense and quick to ask what he can do to help me. He is a kind and patient friend to Isaac and in general has a reputation for being a kind and loyal friend to all. He has seamlessly made the transition to three different elementary schools and gained popularity status along the way. He is the most thankful boy - being thankful for even the smallest of things.

I love that Sam is excited and passionate about all the opportunities that come his way. Whatever he is involved in is embraced with optimism and excitement. Best of all, I love that he loves his mom. He compliments me often and of all things loves it when my hair is in a pony tail - his favorite look on me. I will never tire of his genuine adoration. Happy 10th birthday, Sam. You are so incredibly loved - and today's pony tail is for you!

Isaac and I spent several hours yesterday raking the leaves off our driveway and front lawn. To say there were a lot of leaves is an understatement. We compiled the biggest pile ever and finished after dark. Great for the abs and biceps. Great for the soul. Now to tackle the back lawn . . .

Friends in the City

One of the best things about living close to New York City is all the friends who find their way to the big apple. I love to catch up with friends there and discover new parts of the city with them. Today was a great day to do just that with my Georgia friend, Kim and her daughter, Belinda. We started down by Wall Street and took in Trinity church (think National Treasure), Ground zero, and ended at Washington Square which is such a cool section of the city - neighborhood to NYU. From there we parted ways and I enjoyed the gorgeous autumn evening in the city alone finding my way back to Grand Central as the lights in the buildings were just coming on, providing a cozy ambiance to this great place. Gotta love New York!

Bronx Zoo

Thank heavens for field trips that force us out the door to experience fun things. Sam had his fourth grade field trip to the Bronx zoo yesterday and Isaac and I joined in on the fun. The Bronx zoo is unlike any other - it's more like wandering through the natural habitats of wildlife without peeking through cages or fences. Lucky animals.

Halloween this year couldn't have been better. First of all, the weather was glorious! It's not every year we can ditch the coats and gloves like we did. Isaac and I spent the morning at a town parade that ended at our favorite pond with our favorite magician. We spent the afternoon with our neighbors pulling together an awesome haunted alley for the neighborhood party. The party in the evening was lots of fun - great neighbors - games - fire pit - food - and then trick or treating. We headed over to another party and some trick or treating in another neighborhood afterwards. When the two youngest were in bed, we played chaperone to the two oldest boys and all their friends who chose our house to party at and watch a scarry movie. Believe it or not, I fit in a 10:30 run since Poltergeist just isn't my thing, and running is!

I forego the witch costume this year - just wasn't feeling it. The smartie pants seemed to be a bigger hit anyway.

Didn't see much of Spencer all night since he was with all the other 13 year olds in town vying for the heaviest pillow case. He definitely hit the mother lode.

We have over 30 kids in the neighborhood. The highlight of the night was the scavenger hunt that scanned several houses and the awesome haunted alley.

Of course it doesn't hurt to be 25. I remember the day Lindsey was born. I was going on 15, a freshman in high school. After my mom had spent weeks in the hospital, Lindsey arrived six weeks early, a tiny little thing, and not the brother I anticipated. She is still a tiny little thing, and I'm so glad she's a sister! Considering the age difference, we are as close as can be, and I consider myself so lucky to have her.

Boston

We live less than three hours away from historic Boston and the surrounding properties significant to the founding of our country. It's an October tradition to pay a visit as a family which includes one of the most beautiful drives this time of year. This week, Spencer spent three days there with his entire 8th grade. He had a great time and took some inspiring pictures (for a 13 year old boy, I'm highly impressed!). Highlights of his trip included: Plymouth~Plymouth Rock~Mayflower~duck tour~Lexington~Concord~Salem~Witch museum~Bunker Hill~Paul Revere's house~Old North Church~Blue Man Group~Space museum

Unbelievable that Stockton is 16! This morning in early morning seminary, I caught a fun tradition that the class does on birthdays. Each student and the teacher shares what they like about the birthday kid! Here is the list they came up with for Stockton:
